A fast partnership trick-taking game for 4 players using a 24-card deck: 9, 10, J, Q, K and A of each suit.
Setup
- Partners sit across from each other. Deal five cards to each player, usually in groups of 2 and 3.
- Turn the next card face up. The rest of the deck (the kitty) is set aside.
Card ranking
- The jack of the trump suit (the right bower) is the highest card.
- The other jack of the same color (the left bower) is second highest and counts as a trump.
- Then trump A, K, Q, 10, 9. Other suits rank A, K, Q, J, 10, 9.
Calling trump
- Starting left of the dealer, each player can tell the dealer to pick up the face-up card, making its suit trump. The dealer then discards one card.
- If everyone passes, the card is turned down and players get one more chance to name any other suit as trump.
- The team that names trump is the calling team (the makers). The caller may choose to go alone, and their partner sits out the hand.
Play
- The player left of the dealer leads. Follow suit if you can (the left bower counts as trump, not its printed suit).
- Highest trump wins the trick. If no trump was played, the highest card of the led suit wins.
Scoring
| Calling team takes 3 or 4 tricks | 1 |
| Calling team takes all 5 (a march) | 2 |
| Lone caller takes all 5 | 4 |
| Calling team takes 2 or fewer (euchred) | 2 to the other team |
Winning
The first team to 10 points wins.
