How to play Ship, Captain and Crew

A fast dice game for 2 or more players with five dice. Also called Ship, Captain and Mate, or 6-5-4.

Your turn

  • You get up to three rolls.
  • You need a 6 (the ship), a 5 (the captain) and a 4 (the crew), in that order. Set aside a 6 as soon as you roll one. You can only keep a 5 once you have the 6, and a 4 once you have the 5.
  • Once you have all three, the other two dice are your cargo. If you have rolls left, you can reroll the cargo dice to try for a higher total.
  • If you don't get the 6, 5 and 4 within three rolls, you score 0 for the round.

Scoring

Your score for the round is the total of your two cargo dice, from 2 to 12. Many groups play a set number of rounds and add up the cargo; others give one point to the round winner.

Winning

The highest total after the last round wins.
